Carl Buddig & Company Purchased Rupari Food Services

Production Will Continue in Same Facility

Homewood, Ill. – June 14, 2017 Carl Buddig & Company, a family-owned producer of  branded lunchmeats and sausage products, is pleased to announce that its wholly-owned subsidiary, CBQ, LLC,  has acquired the assets of Rupari Food Services, South Holland, Illinois.  Prior to the sale, Rupari Food Services was a leading producer of branded and private label, restaurant-quality barbecued meats, ribs and heat-and-serve offerings.

“Acquiring the assets of Rupari makes good business sense for Buddig as we expand our portfolio of fresh, great-tasting, affordable meats. It gives us immediate access to an attractive pre-cooked BBQ segment and allows us to strategically grow our nationwide footprint,” said Bob Buddig, CEO of Carl Buddig and Company. “We are excited to welcome a team of more than 200 experienced and dedicated employees to the existing Buddig family of employees.”

Buddig will leverage its national sales and distribution network to continue servicing supermarkets, club stores, food service and military channels. For a limited period of time, Buddig will continue production and sales of Tony Roma’s® branded Ribs and BBQ entrees to ensure continuity of supply and meet retailer and consumer demand. The company will also continue offering its Butcher's Prime® brand and developing customized solutions for its food service customers.

“Buddig prides itself on outstanding customer relationships that stand the test of time,” said Bob Buddig. We recognize the bankruptcy process created challenges for Rupari’s customers, vendors, and employees. Our top priority will be to stabilize the operation, restore confidence, and begin the process of establishing successful long term relationships with our new business partners and employees. This approach has served Buddig well for nearly 75 years and we believe it will be the cornerstone for our success in the future”.

Production will continue the South Holland facility formerly occupied by Rupari. Buddig worked extensively with Rupari to ensure an easy transition between their employees and the new operations through the closing of the sale. The transition included a new collective bargaining agreement between CBQ, LLC and United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, Local 1546.

The purchase of Rupari will bring Carl Buddig’s Illinois-based workforce to more than 1500 employees. The company has a rich history in the state of Illinois and is always looking to continue to expand offerings and opportunities in the state. Carl Buddig & Company is the family-owned parent company of Buddig lunchmeat and Old Wisconsin hardwood-smoked sausage and snack products. Old Wisconsin Brings the Northwoods to Midwest Consumers

Mobile Smokehouse Presents Unique Branded Experience

Homewood, IL. (Aug. 17, 2016)— Old Wisconsin® is a family-owned sausage company from the heart of Wisconsin that believes everyone should experience the authentically handcrafted, hardwood-smoked flavor of Wisconsin. This summer, the company custom-built a mobile pedal-powered Smokehouse that hit the streets of Chicago, Illinois, to bring the big flavors of Wisconsin to the big city and generate consumer trial.

Old Wisconsin is leveraging the mobile Smokehouse to bolster its marketing efforts and drive brand and product awareness with consumers.

“At Old Wisconsin, we operate under the notion that tasting is believing,” said Jeff Weber, national brand manager at Old Wisconsin. “There is a common misconception that meat snacks are only what you eat when you have change left in your pocket or a moment to spare. The mobile Smokehouse was a perfect way to engage with our audience in an authentic way, place the product in consumers’ hands, generate trial, and review and leverage word of mouth to spread brand messaging.”

Old Wisconsin took the Smokehouse to the streets of Chicago in search of people in need of a protein pick-me-up — from parks to outdoor concerts, bars or wherever there was activity, Old Wisconsin was there to deliver a tasty snack packed with nourishing protein and the divine, signature Old Wisconsin smokehouse flavor.

The mobile Smokehouse featured a one-of-a-kind experience with rustic wooden planks, a functioning wood-burning smokestack and an experience inside that transported big city slickers to the Northwoods of Wisconsin with the sights and sounds of nature surrounding them. Once inside, consumers had the chance to taste a variety of products, which included: bites and sticks, summer sausage, Natural Cut™ and Big Smokey varieties.

Consumers loved the taste of the Old Wisconsin products, and their reactions were captured and turned into branded “Tastemonial” videos that will be featured in a variety of ad formats this fall, including :15, :30 and :60 pre-roll, mid-roll and in-video banner ads on Hulu, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram, and in eight high-priority markets: Minneapolis, Chicago, Grand Rapids, Tampa, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Kansas City, Des Moines and Milwaukee.

The Old Wisconsin Smokehouse made its first event appearance at the 16th Packers Family Night on July 31 in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and through the end of October, the Smokehouse will continue to make stops at select events throughout the Midwest.

$20,000 Awarded to Santa Rosa Local and Redwood Empire Food Bank From Carl Buddig & Company

Santa Rosa, Calif. (June 28, 2016) — Today, Carl Buddig & Company is awarding Redwood Empire Food Bank and Amy Meiers, a local Santa Rosa resident, $10,000 each as part of the company’s first national “Make It Delish Recipe Contest.” The Make It Delish Recipe Contest tasked consumers with submitting a recipe using Buddig and/or Old Wisconsin products and a secret ingredient for a chance to win monthly prizes as well as the $10,000 Grand Prize. In addition to Meiers’ grand-prize winnings, her primary grocer, G&G Supermarket, was also awarded $10,000 to donate to a charity of its choice, Redwood Empire Food Bank.

Beginning October 1, 2015, three recipes were awarded first-, second- and third- place prizes by a panel of judges each month through December 2015. Meiers’ submission placed third in the month of December and was voted the grand-prize winner by the general public from the top nine recipes throughout the contest. More than 1,000 entries were accrued throughout the duration of contest.

Carl Buddig & Company and Old Wisconsin are owned and operated by the Buddig family, and for them, family is at the heart of everything they do. As a family-owned company for more than 73 years, they value the importance of family traditions, especially during mealtime.

“Each year we honor this commitment to feeding family traditions by participating in a variety of cause-marketing programs, monthly donations to charities and organizations, and through consumer promotions,” said Tom Buddig, executive vice president of marketing for Carl Buddig & Company. “The Make It Delish Recipe Contest provides families an opportunity to be creative in the kitchen, spend quality time together and pass on their family traditions to others with their recipe submission. The grocer and food charity component is something new for us, and we feel it aligns well with our mission as a company.”

The idea of family traditions is also reflected in Meiers’ story — the 31-year-old California native grew up on Buddig lunchmeat. “My mom used to buy Buddig lunchmeat when I was little,” Meiers said. “This was always a special treat because we normally got cafeteria lunch at school. I still buy it for my husband — he’s a firefighter and makes his own lunches while he’s on his shift. The Buddig Original packs are perfect for him!”

After hearing about the Make It Delish Recipe Contest, Meiers wanted to create something that would be fun and easy to make with her son and that other families could make with their children. Meiers’ love for roasted red bell peppers on her sandwiches inspired her grand-prize-winning recipe — Ham and Pepper Twisters (view the recipe here).

Meiers is a frequent shopper of G&G Supermarket in Santa Rosa, California, so as the primary grocer, G&G was also awarded $10,000 from Carl Buddig & Company to donate to a food charity of its choice, Redwood Empire Food Bank.

“Redwood Empire Food Bank is a staple in our community,” said Carol Lowe-Drake of G&G Supermarkets. “The organization has a variety of programs that extend to not only the Santa Rosa community but the entire north coast of California — from Sonoma County to the Oregon border. We know the donation to Redwood Empire Food Bank will continue to help feed families and provide relief for those in the area.”

Since 1987, the Redwood Empire Food Bank has been dedicated to ending hunger in communities by providing accessible nutrition assistance to anyone in need.

Continuing with this tradition, the brands are excited to announce a new consumer promotion this year, the “Make It Delish Recipe Contest.” Buddig and Old Wisconsin fans make great cooks, so beginning Oct. 1, consumers can log on to www.makeitdelish.com and submit a recipe featuring their favorite Buddig and/or Old Wisconsin product — plus the secret ingredient — and enter for a chance to win a variety of cash prizes each month through Dec. 31 as well as a chance at the $10,000 Grand Prize.

“Carl Buddig & Company and Old Wisconsin’s products are so versatile — they can be the center of a dish, used in a side or mixed into a complex entrée,” said Tom Buddig, executive vice president of marketing at Carl Buddig & Company. “What’s fun about this contest is that consumers will be sharing their own Buddig- and Old Wisconsin-inspired recipes and passing on some of their mealtime traditions to other families.”

Each month — October, November and December — will feature a new secret ingredient and a chance to win. At the end of each month, all the submitted recipes will be evaluated by a panel of judges, which includes Buddig family members and a trained chef. The top three scoring recipes each month will win 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes of $1,000, $500 and $250, respectively, as well as automatically be entered to be a Grand Prize finalist. Top-scoring recipes throughout the contest will also be featured in a special digital Buddig cookbook that will be available for download early 2016.

An unlimited number of recipes can submitted, but each recipe must be unique. Judges will be scoring recipes based on the following criteria:

  • Simplicity: Is the recipe easy to make, are the directions clear and are ingredients easy to find?
  • Creativity: Out-of-the-ordinary recipes will have an edge!
  • Use of secret ingredient: Does the recipe do a good job of incorporating both the secret ingredient as well as the Buddig/Old Wisconsin product?
  • Flavor: Does the end result taste good?

After all Grand Prize finalists have been selected, voting will be open to the general public for them to decide which recipe takes the cake. The recipe with the most votes will be named the Grand Prize winner and receive $10,000. An additional $10,000 will also be given to the winner’s primary retailer, who will donate the prize winnings to its charity of choice.*
